Create a study guide from your own class material

Generic study guides cover what a subject usually includes. Yours should cover what your course actually taught. TurboStudy builds a detailed study guide from your lectures and readings — organized by topic, with definitions, worked examples and the mistakes students commonly make.

What makes a study guide useful

A good study guide is organized for practice, not for reading. Check yours has:

  • Every major topic, in an order that builds — not just the order pages were printed.
  • Definitions and formulas, each with what it means in plain language.
  • Worked examples, explained step by step.
  • How ideas relate: causes, effects, contrasts and dependencies.
  • Common mistakes and look-alike concepts that are easy to mix up.

Use the guide to test yourself

The trap with a beautiful study guide is reading it over and over. It feels like progress because the material becomes familiar, but familiarity isn't the same as being able to produce an answer under exam conditions.

Instead: cover a section, explain it out loud as if teaching a friend, then check. Where your explanation got vague or stuck is exactly what to work on. Explaining in your own words (self-explanation) is one of the better-supported study strategies, and it's the idea behind Active Recall.

Plan the weeks before the exam

Once you have the guide, turn it into a schedule rather than a single cram session:

  • List the topics and mark each as strong, shaky or unknown.
  • Start with shaky and unknown topics, but revisit strong ones briefly every few days.
  • Mix topics in your practice sessions once you've covered each one.
  • Take a full practice exam about a week out, and leave time to fix what it reveals.

Check it against the syllabus

If your instructor lists learning objectives or provides an official review sheet, compare it with your guide. Any objective your guide doesn't cover is a gap in your material — ask about it, or find the lecture or reading it belongs to.

Frequently asked questions

How is a study guide different from notes?

Notes follow one lecture or reading. A study guide pulls everything for a topic together and adds what you need for review: examples, common mistakes and what the material emphasizes.

Can it make a study guide for my whole course?

Yes. Upload your lectures and readings to a course and TurboStudy organizes them into topics across the course. The free tool on this page handles about 8,000 characters at a time.

Will the guide tell me what's on the exam?

No tool can know that. The guide shows what your material emphasizes. Pro's Professor Profile and Exam Blueprint go further by analyzing your syllabus and practice material for topic weighting.

Can I export my study guide?

Standard and Pro members can export notes and study guides.

Is it accurate?

The guide is written only from your material, with references back to the source. AI can make mistakes, so verify important details.
