An AI practice exam generator built from your own course material
Upload your lecture slides, notes and readings, and TurboStudy builds a full practice exam from them: a mixed-topic, multiple-choice test at exam-level difficulty that you take in one timed sitting, then review topic by topic. It can't know what's on your real exam — no tool can — but it shows how you perform on your course material under exam conditions, while there's still time to fix the gaps.

How it works
Step 1: Upload the course
Slides, notes, readings and recordings — the lectures and topics the exam covers.
Step 2: Choose what it covers
Pick the lectures or topics on the syllabus and set the difficulty.
Step 3: Take it like the real thing
Timed, closed-book, in one sitting, without checking answers as you go.
Step 4: Review by topic
See which topics cost you marks, read every explanation and retry your misses.

Why a practice exam beats one more read-through
Re-reading measures whether material looks familiar. A practice exam measures whether you can produce answers, under time pressure, without your notes — which is what you'll actually be asked to do.
Practicing in conditions that resemble the test also helps. Memory works best when the way you practice matches the way you'll need to use the knowledge, so practice answering, not reviewing. Our guide on turning lecture slides into practice exams shows how to do this by hand, too.
Simulate the real exam
A practice exam only tells you the truth if you take it honestly:
- Set a timer for the real exam length, or scale it to the number of questions.
- Closed book, phone in another room, no pausing to look things up.
- Commit to an answer before checking — and for multiple choice, be able to say why each other option is wrong.
- Mark it afterwards, all at once, and note every question you got wrong or guessed.
Do an error analysis
Not all mistakes need the same fix. Sort every miss into one of four types:
- Didn't know it: a content gap — go back to the material and make flashcards.
- Misunderstood it: you had the wrong idea — find the explanation, then do a few similar questions.
- Careless: you knew it but slipped — slow down, re-read questions, check units and keywords.
- Ran out of time: practice pacing and move on from stuck questions faster.
When to take practice exams
Take your first practice exam one to two weeks before the real one, as a diagnostic — scoring low then is useful, not a disaster. Take another midway through your review to measure progress, and a final one a few days out. Avoid a full practice exam the night before; use that evening for a light review of your error list and sleep.
Between attempts, work on the topics the exam exposed with short quizzes and active recall, then check whether your Exam Readiness Score moves.
Calibrate your confidence
Before checking each answer, rate how sure you were. Questions you were sure about but got wrong are the most dangerous: you'd never think to review them. A related trap is knowing the definitions but missing application questions — TurboStudy Pro's False Mastery Detection flags topics where that happens, and Pro's adaptive mock exams put more weight on the topics you're weakest on.

Frequently asked questions
Are these the questions on my real exam?
No. Questions are generated from your course material to practice the same concepts and question styles. No tool can know what your actual exam contains.
What question types do practice exams include?
Multiple-choice questions with 4 options and one correct answer, at exam-level difficulty — mostly application and analysis, with calculation questions where your material has them.
Is the practice exam generator free?
Full practice exams are a Standard feature and count toward your monthly AI study generations (100 on Standard, 250 on Pro). On Free you can make quizzes of up to 10 questions, and you can try the practice question generator on this page without an account.
What should I upload for the best practice exam?
Everything the exam covers: lecture slides, your notes, assigned readings and any practice questions you're allowed to use. The more of the course you add, the better the exam spreads across its topics.
What's an adaptive mock exam?
A Pro feature: a mock exam that adjusts to your performance and puts more weight on the topics you're weakest on.
